๐Ÿ“ย  CHAPTER NOTES

๐Ÿ“˜ 1. Earth’s Surface โ€” Water vs Land

When we look at Earth from space, it appears mostly BLUE. That’s because almost 3/4 (three-fourths) of Earth’s surface is covered with water!

๐ŸŒŠ WATER

โ‰ˆ 3/4 of Earth’s surface

(About 71%)

๐Ÿ”๏ธ LAND

โ‰ˆ 1/4 of Earth’s surface

(About 29%)

Mostly salty seawater โ€” not drinkable!

Large bodies = Continents / Landmasses

๐Ÿ’ก Key Fact: Why is Earth called the ‘Blue Planet’?

Because nearly 3/4 of Earth is water, it appears BLUE from space.

Early astronauts called it the ‘Blue Planet’.

๐Ÿ“˜ 2. Key Terms You Must Know

Ocean

The largest water bodies on Earth. Salty and vast.

Landmass

A large body of land.

Continent

A large continuous expanse of land (a type of landmass).

Island

A landmass (smaller than a continent) surrounded by water on all sides.

Marine

Related to or found in the oceans and seas.

Flora

Plant life of a region (e.g., algae, seaweeds).

Fauna

Animal life of a region (e.g., fish, dolphins, whales).

๐Ÿ“˜ 3. Distribution of Water and Land

Water and land are NOT equally distributed between the two hemispheres:

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

MORE LAND than water

MORE WATER than land

๐Ÿ“˜ 4. The Five Oceans (Largest to Smallest)

Rank

Ocean

Key Facts

1

๐ŸŒ Pacific Ocean

LARGEST โ€” covers more area than all land combined!

2

๐ŸŒŠ Atlantic Ocean

Second largest; between America & Europe/Africa

3

๐Ÿฌ Indian Ocean

Third largest; borders India on both sides

4

๐ŸงŠ Southern (Antarctic) Ocean

Surrounds Antarctica

5

โ„๏ธ Arctic Ocean

SMALLEST; surrounds the North Pole

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India and the Indian Ocean

Arabian Sea โ€” to the WEST of India

Bay of Bengal โ€” to the EAST of India

Both are parts of the Indian Ocean.

๐Ÿ“˜ 5. The Seven Continents

Continents can be counted in 4 ways (4, 5, 6, or 7). The most widely used count is SEVEN:

Continent

Key Fact

๐ŸŒ Asia

LARGEST continent โ€” India is part of Asia

๐ŸŒ Africa

Second largest continent

๐ŸŒŽ North America

Third largest

๐ŸŒŽ South America

Fourth largest

๐ŸงŠ Antarctica

COLDEST continent; mostly ice; no permanent residents

๐ŸŒ Europe

Geologically same landmass as Asia (Eurasia)

๐Ÿฆ˜ Australia

SMALLEST continent

๐Ÿ† Quick Memory Trick โ€” Size Order of Continents

Largest โ†’ Smallest:ย  Asia > Africa > North America > South America > Antarctica > Europe > Australia

Memory Aid: ‘A ANAS AEA’ or just: Asia, Africa, N.Am, S.Am, Antarctica, Europe, Australia

๐Ÿ“˜ 6. Islands

  • An island is a piece of land SMALLER than a continent, surrounded by water on all sides.
  • There are lakhs of islands on Earth.
  • Greenland = Largest island in the world.
  • India has more than 1,300 islands!

Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Located in the Bay of Bengal (East of India)

Lakshadweep Islands

Located in the Arabian Sea (West of India)

๐Ÿ“˜ 7. Oceans and Disasters

๐ŸŒ€ Cyclone

Violent storm with extreme rain and strong winds. Damages coastal regions.

๐ŸŒŠ Tsunami

Huge wave caused by underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. Travels thousands of km.

๐Ÿ“… Remember: 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami

Date: 26 December 2004

Cause: Earthquake in Indonesia

Impact: 14 countries affected; 2 lakh+ lives lost

India: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Kerala coast severely affected

Solution: Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (early warning system)

๐Ÿ“˜ 8. Oceans and Life โ€” Why Oceans Matter

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rain Oceans evaporate water which falls as rain. Without oceans = No rainfall = Earth becomes a desert!

๐Ÿซ Oxygen Over 50% of world’s oxygen is produced by ocean plants (algae, seaweeds). That’s why oceans are called ‘Planet’s Lungs’.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Climate Oceans regulate Earth’s temperature and climate.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food Oceans provide food through fishing.

๐Ÿšข Trade & Travel Historically used for migration, trade, and military campaigns.

๐ŸŽญ Culture Coastal people have tales, legends, and traditions related to the sea.

โš ๏ธ Ocean Threats โ€” Human Activity

Plastic Pollution: Millions of tonnes of plastic thrown into oceans every year โ†’ kills marine life.

Overfishing: Too much fishing โ†’ decline of fish populations.

Other Pollution: Industrial waste, oil spills.

World Oceans Day: June 8 (designated by the United Nations).

๐Ÿ“˜ 9. India and Antarctica

  • Since 1981 โ€” India’s Antarctic Programme has been exploring Antarctica.
  • 1983 โ€” India’s FIRST scientific base station: ‘Dakshin Gangotri’
  • Total 3 bases have been set up.
  • About 40 teams of scientists have done research on climate and environment.
  • The station even has a library and post office!

๐Ÿ“‹ Quick Summary โ€” Before We Move On

Earth = 3/4 water (oceans) + 1/4 land (continents)

5 Oceans: Pacific (largest) > Atlantic > Indian > Southern > Arctic (smallest)

7 Continents: Asia (largest) > Africa > N.Am > S.Am > Antarctica > Europe > Australia (smallest)

Northern Hemisphere: More land | Southern Hemisphere: More water

Island = small landmass surrounded by water

Oceans = planet’s lungs, produce 50%+ oxygen, give us rain

Tsunami = huge ocean wave from earthquake; 2004 tsunami killed 2 lakh+ people

  2. Pacific
  3. Arctic
  4. Asia / Australia
  5. Andaman & Nicobar / Lakshadweep
  6. Oxygen

Part C โ€” Short Answers

Q7. Northern Hemisphere has more land. Most of the world’s continents (Europe, Asia, N. America) are in the Northern Hemisphere.

Q8. A tsunami is a huge powerful wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. In 2004, a tsunami caused by an earthquake in Indonesia hit India โ€” Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala coasts were severely affected; over 2 lakh people died.

Q9. Oceans are called ‘planet’s lungs’ because they produce more than 50% of Earth’s oxygen. They also bring rainfall, provide food (fish), regulate climate, and support marine life.
